A key federal advisory committee is looking for a few good public servants; they may help shape ERISA disability benefits policy for years to come.
The Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) requires the Department of Labor to appoint 15 members to an advisory council. Five members’ terms will expire by the year’s end and nominations are now open to the public, the council says.
It may be intriguing to see who gets nominated, and who gets selected. The council meets at least four times per year, around the country. Its work can have an outsize effect on federal policy: For instance, the council’s 2012 report on the crisis in ERISA disability benefits formed the backbone to new federal rules governing the way private companies handle disability claims that just took effect this year. The Department of Labor leaned heavily on the council’s testimony and recommendations when it handed down regulations that officials hope will make ERISA disability claims a little fairer to claimants.
The council is looking for five different people-one each to represent employee organizations, employers, corporate trusts, investment managers and the general public, it says in its public notice. The nominations process closes Aug. 1. Labor Secretary R. Alexander Acosta will make his choices known sometime before the end of the year.
